Gala Charity Christmas Concert

Over 130 musicians from Monmouth School and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls took part in the annual Charity Concert in the Blake Theatre on Friday 4 December.

The evening saw performances by groups ranging from three pupils to sixty pupils, and in all styles, from classical to big band.  The evening was in aid of the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) and their representative, Mervyn Fleming, gave an enlightening talk on the work of the Association, which receives no government funding and yet looks after safety on the whole of the tidal rivers Severn and Wye.  The concert raised over £1,000 and a cheque will be presented to the Association in the New Year.

Director of Music David Lawson said, “Our musicians themselves chose this charity and what a worthy cause it is.  We are so pleased to be able to bring together the efforts of so many of our pupils to produce such an enjoyable and festive evening in such a good cause”.

Inglefield House Christingle Service

Inglefield House celebrated Christmas with a Christingle Service on Friday 11th December. Parents gathered in St. Mary's Church, Monmouth for a feast of singing, acting and instrumental music. The service culminated with the lighting of the Christingles which had been made by the children earlier that day, providing an atmospheric end to the evening.

Monmouth Science Initiative

The scheme is now in its second year. The number of schools involved has increased to seven and each week 58 pupils from these schools take part in a range of practical science tasks whose aims Are to encourage them to acquire advanced scientific skills and to enhance their understanding of the importance of science in the modern world. On November 18th all

the participants visited Cardiff University where they undertook a range of exercises typical of those given to undergraduates. The University generously allowed them to use valuable equipment and several senior staff gave up their time to work with them.

There will be two more visits to Cardiff University and the whole program ends with a science conference in May.

The organisers of the scheme are always pleased to hear from any interested individuals and organisations who may be able to support the venture.  Please contact Dr A. Francis c/o Monmouth School.
